This section is planned to show all changes to smaller operators' routes in Hereford and Worcester from just pre-deregulation (Summer 1986) until the end of the County (March 1999).  I am slowly improving the format of the section by reformatting each alphabetical section.

461 Kington - Weobley - Hereford (NSu)

Autumn 1985 : Much of service operated under sub-contract to Yeomans.

1 April 1986 : Gained from Yeomans Motors

7 May 1988 : Contract retendered and as a result the service was revised and improved. There is now an 0930 journey from Kington and a 1405 journey from Hereford NSu but this deviates via Eardisley, Almeley and Kinnersley, omitting

Weobley, on a Wednesday and via Eardisley, Almeley, Kinnersley and Weobley on a Friday and Saturday.

1 May 1989 : Extra Monday to Friday journeys between Kington and Hereford (Eye Hospital) added, in connection with a works service.

14 January 1991 : Timetables modified

6 April 1991 : Revised with the last journey from Hereford now commencing at the Railway Station.

27 September 1991 : Most of the additional works journeys withdrawn

27 February 1995 : Monday to Friday evening peak journey run by Yeomans Canyon Travel gained, making Sargeants the sole operator on route.

2 September 1995 : Kington terminus standardised on Mill Street,

3 March 1989 : Additional Friday journeys introduced. These connect with the Primrose Motors ser- vice to/from Leominster at Lyonshall.

27 October 1989 : Friday journeys withdrawn after operation on this date, having failed to gain suffi- cient patronage

997 (Kington - Presteigne - Torvale Works, M-F)

30 September 1993 : Withdrawn.


Shropshire County Council : 726 (Ludlow - Caynham - Hope Bagot - Tenbury) (T) and the Satur- day service on 731 (Ludlow - Brimfield - Tenbury) were acquired from GoWhittle from 10 February 1990. The last Saturday afternoon round trip was discontinued due to poor patronage. 726 (Ludlow - Caynham - Tenbury Wells, T) was won by Go Whittle from 1 September 1992. Similarly 731 (Lud- low - Brimfield - Tenbury Wells, S) was won by Midland Red West from the same date. Following withdrawal by People Express, 297 (Kidderminster - Bridgnorth, NSu) was operated by the County's Education Department buses between 28 July 1997 and 31 August 1997, when Busy Bus took over to a revised timetable.


Shropshire Link of Cradley Heath : 27 December 1997 (probably already reported by Shropshire, but SL didn't have the decency to send copy reg to H&W) : One S jny on 740 (Ludlow - Knighton) diverted via Craven Arms. 6 September 1997 : Take-over of S service on 731 (Ludlow - Tenbury) from Midland Red West not previously reported by me.



Silverline Coaches of Brecon : New service 41 (Merthyr Tydfil - Brecon - Hereford, TThS) com- menced on 1 October 1996. With journeys at 0845 from Merthyr, 1315 from Brecon to Hereford and 1045 from Hereford to Brecon, 1430 to Merthyr, the service runs via Groesffordd, Llanfihangel Talyllyn, Llangors, Trefecca, Talgarth, Glasbury-on-Wye, Hay-on-Wye, Bredwardine, Byford and Whitecross to Hereford Railway Station.

3 June 1989 : Saturday service acquired from Swanbrook. This now extends to Cheltenham.

6 June 1990 : Timings of the tendered Saturday service revised to allow for a meal break, also on that day diverted via Court Road and Barnards Green

4 August 1990 : Saturday service ceased after operation on this date, with Midland Red West tak- ing over. The contract did not terminate until the end of August, but difficulty in recruiting drivers led to an early transfer. Smiths now operates only a commercial Wednesday service between Malvern Link and Gloucester.

29 May 1996 : Now operated under contract, diverted via Barnards Green in Malvern


378 (Malvern Wells - Great Malvern, M-F plus Rye Cross - Castlemorton - Welland - Great Malvern, F)

31 August 1996. Gained from Jones Bros. of Malvern. The MW services operated by Jones were not replaced due to lack of use. The F journeys on 378 run via Castlemorton Village and Chan- dler's Cross to provide some form of replacement for Newbury Coaches 686.

381 Malvern Link - Cheltenham via Great Malvern, Hanley Swan, Hanley Castle, Upton, Tewkes- bury (S) (Some journeys on 381 run via Guarlford between Barnards Green and Hanley Swan, and via Longdon and Bushley between Upton and Tewkesbury. Between Tewkesbury and Cheltenham the route is via Bishops Cleeve or Combe Hill)

27 May 1995 : 0730 journey from Hereford to Ledbury gained from Yeomans Canyon Travel in col- lege holidays only, with a new 0700 from Ledbury Depot added. Yeomans continue to run on col- lege days.

29 January 1996 : M-F morning journey runs all year, the College term service having been gained from Yeomans.

24 February 1997 : College days peak hour journey was taken over by Yeomans, on a commercial basis.

24 February 1996 : Reduced to T only, the Saturday service being lost to Bromyard Omnibus, and the Tuesday journey no longer serves Broad Oak. The service is renumbered 673.

2 January 1992 : Brought under subsidy contract, as a result now conforms to the normal stopping places used by service 476 operated by D.R.M. Coaches. The service therefore now carries ser- vice number 476, q.v.


980 (Bromyard - Newtown - Ledbury Preserves Factory, M-F)

2 April 1986 : Evening journey returns to Newtown Crossroads only, extra later journey from Ledbury (Bye Street) to Bromyard via Bishops Frome.

1 September 1992 : Request diversion via Treelinks Factory withdrawn

11 March 1993 : Withdrawn after operation on this day. County Council subsidy had been with- drawn some time previously, as the patronage had fallen to 2 regular passengers. Last day of op- eration as a local bus service was actually 9 March, the service running on a free basis on the sub- sequent two days whilst last ditch attempts were made (unsuccessfully) to obtain other funding for the service.


981 (Ledbury to Hereford via Bosbury, Bishops Frome, Bromyard, Withington, Whitestone and Bartestree) Thursday evenings mainly for bingo

1 June 1989 : Commenced. Partly replaces a service previously run by C N Jones Ltd., supported by a Rural Transport Development Fund grant.

21 June 1990 : Ceased after operation on this date, replaced by a Thursday evening journey on 420 (Bromyard - Hereford) operated by Martin J Perry of Bromyard.


Smiths Motors of Ledbury : 890 (British Camp - Chase High School, Sch) was gained from Jones Bros with effect from 2 September 1997. Smiths of Ledbury : 19 February 1998 : 459 (Ledbury - Ross, Th) withdrawn. Brampton Abbotts is served by A H Martin and Son, the remainder of the service is not replaced.

Soudley Valley Coaches : Following tendering, this operator commenced operation on for- mer Dean Forest routes from 17 April 1989. Services are Cinderford - Nailbridge - Ruardean - Kerne Bridge - Ross (1 round trip NSu mornings) and Coleford - Christchurch - English Bicknor - Lydbrook - Joys Green - Ruardean - Kerne Bridge - Ross (1 round trip NSu afternoons). County publicity shows the forward Saturday afternoon journey as running via Howle Hill rather than Kerne Bridge. Other services remain with Dukes Travel and Martins. 35 (Coleford - Ruardean - Ross-on-Wye, NSu) was revised from 4 August 1990. Most journeys now run Lydney - Cinderford - Ruardean - Ross-on-Wye, with connections from Coleford at Ruardean. 30 (Crooked End - Howle Hill - Ross, TTh) and 32 (Symonds Yat -Llangarron - Ross, T) were taken over from L.C.K. Taxis when the latter firm ceased trading, from 20 August 1991. 30 (Crooked End - Howle Hill - Ross, TTh) and 32 (Symonds Yat - Llangarron - Ross, T) were taken over from L.C.K. From 3 August 1992, MW journeys on 46 (Cinderford - Lydbrook - Ross-on-Wye, NSu) were diverted to oper- ate to/from Coleford instead of Ross-on-Wye. The remaining journeys were extended to/from the Country Super Store at Ross-on-Wye. The MW journeys are replaced under tender but operate via Drybrook and omit Ruardean Woodside, and run to/from Cantilupe Road in Ross only. 46 (Ross - Lydbrook - Cinderford) has been revised to serve Ruardean Woodside every day, and the extension to the Country Superstore at Ross has been deleted. 46 (Cinderford - Ross-on-Wye, NSu) was further amended from 2 August 1993. All journeys to/from Ross now serve Drybrook and Ruardean Woodside with the exception of the 1100Th journey from Ross, which omits these places and serves The Pludds. 46 (Coleford - Ross-on-Wye, S) was reduced to one journey in each direction, and the Lydbrook - Ross section of 45 (Cinderford - Ross-on-Wye, NSu) was reduced to TThS only from 1 September 1997.


John Speck Coaches of Fromes Hill : Service 470 (Ledbury - Cradley - Bishops Frome - Hereford, W) was transferred from DRM Coaches, following retendering, from 2 January 1991. School service 870 (Corse Lawn -Forthampton - Bushley Green - Bushley - Shuthonger - Tewkesbury C of E School) commenced on 7 January 1991. John Speck Coaches of Fromes Hill : 470 (Bosbury - Hereford, W) was extended back to start from Ledbury from 10 April 1991. 879 (Hanley Castle School - Hanley Swan) is a short-distance Schooldays service for non-entitled schoolchildren started on 3 September 1991. The route of Schooldays ser- vice 870 (Corse Lawn - Tewkesbury) was revised from September 1991 due to the closure of Haw Bridge, and now runs from Bushley via Bushley Green, Forthampton, Tirley and Apperley. 879 (Hanley Castle School - Hanley Swan, Sch) was replaced by Smith's Motors from 6 April 1992. 456 (Much Marcle - Hereford via How Caple, Kings Caple and Fownhope, S) was gained from George Young's Coaches from 25 April 1992 and diverted via Holme Lacy and Rotherwas rather than Mordiford, partially replacing Lugg Valley Motors 454. 470 ( Ledbury - Bishops Frome - Hereford, W) omits Wellington Heath from 22 April 1992. Service 565 was gained from Rover Coaches and Midland Red West from 22 April 1992. On Wednes- days this now runs Ashton-under-Hill - Kersoe - Elmley Castle - The Combertons - Pershore - Drakes Broughton - Spetchley - Ronkswood Hospitals - Worcester, whilst on Fridays it runs Cropthorne - Elmley Castle - The Combertons - Pershore. 556 (Peopleton - Drakes Broughton - Pershore, F) was also won from Midland Red West. 870 (Long Green - Tewkesbury Comprehensive School, Sch) was amended from 30 November 1992 to run via Mythe Bridge. 470 (Ledbury - Bishops Frome - Hereford, W) was extended in Hereford from 31 March 1993 to serve Maylord Orchards, although the extension was operated on a "free" basis for two weeks pending the grant of the registration amendment. 470 (Ledbury - Cradley - Westhide - Here- ford, W) was lost to Smiths of Ledbury from 7 September 1994. 456 (Much Marcle - Kings Caple - Hereford,S) was lost to Young’s Coaches from 22 April 1995, whilst 556 (Peopleton - Pershore, F) and 565 (Ashton-under-Hill - Worcester, WF) were lost to Boomerang Bus Company from 26 April 1995. School service 870 (Corse Lawn - Tewkesbury) was deregistered with effect from 28 April 1995.

Stratford Blue (Midland Red South) of Rugby : From 5 January 1992, the Sunday service between Redditch and Evesham/Stratford on routes 166/176 was gained from Midland Red West. 166 (Redditch - Evesham) now runs as 146 via Crabbs Cross, with one journey in each direction extended via Wickhamford to Broadway, whilst 166 (Redditch - Stratford) runs direct from Alcester to Stratford, thence via Dodwell, Welford-on-Avon, Bidford-on-Avon, South Littleton, Evesham and Wickhamford to Broadway. 146 (Redditch - Bidford - Evesham - Broadway, Su) and 166 (Redditch - Bidford - Stratford-upon-Avon - Evesham - Broadway, SuBH) ceased after 31 August 1992 (Late Summer Bank Holiday). The service, previously subsidised by Hereford and Worcester County Council with no contribution from CENTRO or Warwickshire, carried insufficient passengers to justify continuing subsidy. Stratford Blue (Midland Red South) : The "Cotswold Connection" Sunday and Bank Holiday leisure service 166 commenced on 11 April 1993. This runs between Redditch and Worcester via Crabbs Cross, Studley, Alcester, Ragley Hall Gates, Bidford-on-Avon, Welford-on-Avon, Stratford- upon-Avon, Micklton, Chipping Campden, Broadway Tower, Broadway, Wickhamford, Evesham, Pershore and Stoulton. The first journey from Stratford runs from Alcester direct to Stratford then via Welford, Bidford, Cleeve Prior, South Littleton and Badsey to Evesham, connecting at Evesham with the second bus operated by Boomerang. The midday journey from Worcester runs via the standard route to Stratford and then circles via Bidford, South Littleton and Evesham back to Worcester. 228 (Redditch - Alcester - Stratford) was improved from 19 April 1993, 2 off-peak journeys being operated in each direction Monday to Saturday, plus Schoolday peak journeys.



Strathyre Coaches of Stirchley : Three new services commenced on 4 May 1993, seeming to be positioning journeys for a school contract. They are Stirchley (Post Office) - South Cotteridge - Redhill Road - Alvechurch - Church Hill Centre (Redditch) (am only), Marlbrook (Braces Lane) - Lickey - Stirchley (P.O) and Alvechurch (Red Lion) - Rednal - Longbridge - Stirchley( pm only). Special services 964,966 and 967 be- tween Stirchley and the Redditch area were cancelled with effect from 18 August 1994.
