HISTORY OF
HEREFORD & WORCESTER COUNTY
SMALL OPERATORS BUS SERVICES

This section is planned to show all changes to smaller operators' routes in Hereford and Worcester from just pre-deregulation (Summer 1986) until the end of the County (March 1999).  I am slowly improving the format of the section, firstly by splitting it into pages following letters of the alphabet to improve loading times, secondly by reformatting each alphabetical section.

To move to another page choose the first letter for the operator in which you are interested :-

NOTES : Placed on the web "as it is". Very poor format yet, I accept, probably needing splitting into several pages and with links to different operators. The pages are supposed to show all changes to smaller operators' routes in Hereford and Worcester from just pre-deregulation (Summer 1986) until the end of the County (March 1999).

OPERATORS : LETTER P ONWARDS

R & B Travel (Radnor) of Clee Hill : 764 (Tenbury - Hereford via Brimfield and Kimbolton, 3rd W of month) was gained from Lugg Valley Motors from 20 August 1997.

Red Arrow Express of Worcester : 42 (Malvern Link - Barnards Green, S) was curtailed to start at Leos in Malvern Link and finish at Barnards Green shops from 1 June 1997. This was in connection with the registration of a multitude of positioning journeys as 144 (Birming- ham - Great Malvern) with additional NSu oddments between Birmingham and Worcester including a 2340 Worcester - Bham, plus S morning journeys Worcester - Malvern Link and Barnards Green - Droitwich and extra Su oddments Worcester - Birmingham including early morning and late evening journeys. Red Arrow Express of Worcester : 358/365 are new circular commercial Worcester city services, in competition with Midland Red West, from 1 September 1997. 358 runs from the Bus Station via Rainbow Hill and Brickfields (MRW 35 route) to Warndon, returning via Tolladine Road to the Bus Station (MRW 38 route). 365 runs in the opposite direction. Each run about every 30 minutes NESu. From the same date, some positioning journeys on 144 (Worcester - Birmingham) become X44, running via the M5 for some or all of the Droitwich - Birmingham section. Also, late night FS (actually very early SSu morning) journeys on 62N (Birmingham - Longbridge) will extend on request to Rednal and/or Rubery. Red Arrow Express of Worcester : The Warndon terminal loop of 365 (Worcester - Warndon Circular, NESu) was revised from 20 October 1997, to enable inbound buses to all serve the same stop. Red Arrow Express of Smethwick : 29 Nov 1997 : All Worcestershire services were deregistered after this date, with those operated under contract being transferred to Midland Red West and those operated commercially ceasing. Thus ended the only significant competition in Worcester since deregulation. Night service 62N (Birmingham - Rubery), which operates mainly in the CENTRO area, also ceased from the same date.

Red & White (National Welsh) of Cardiff :

X49 Cardiff - Monmouth - Hereford

6 May 1987 : Additional Wednesday journey added in each direction, running to/from Wyesham in Monmouth.

22 June 1988 : Additional Wednesday journey withdrawn after this date.

The Saturday service on 37 (Ross - Hoarwithy - Hereford) ceased after 16 September 1989, with a replacement service being provided by extension back of a Midland Red West service 118 journey. 34 (Newport - Monmouth - Ross-on-Wye -Gloucester) was curtailed to operate between Ross-on-Wye and Gloucester only from 11 December 1989. The Monmouth -Ross-on-Wye section was acquired by Smith's Motors on emergency tender. The service between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth was reintroduced Monday to Saturday from 2 July 1990, although as the journeys are mainly positioning journeys for Ross-on-Wye Garage there are few clashes with A H Martin and Sons service. Service number 61 is used by Red and White, with most journeys running via Tudorville, Kerne Bridge, Goodrich and Whitchurch but one journey in each direction running direct between Whitchurch and Ross. 35 (Mireystock - Lydbrook - Ross, M-F) was withdrawn after operation on 3 January 1992, without replacement. 37 (Ross - Hoarwithy - Hereford, M-F) was also withdrawn after this date, the tender being gained by Blue Line. The solitary afternoon peak journey from Here- ford that diverted via Hoarwithy before returning to the 38 route now carries service number 38. The peak journeys between Ross-on-Wye, Gorsley and Newent on 34 (Ross - Newent - Gloucester, NSu) previously operated by David Field were won from 12 April 1993. The Sun- day service on 38 (Hereford - Ross - Gloucester) was won by Cheltenham and Gloucester from 11 April 1993. 61 (Ross-on-Wye - Kerne Bridge - Whitchurch - Monmouth, NSu) was won from A H Martin and Sons from 10 April 1993. 20 (Hereford - Abergavenny - Pontypool - Newport, NSu) was rerouted in the Cwmbran area from 1 April 1993. This company started journeys on service 416 (Hereford - Monmouth, NSu) in competition with Phil Anslow Travel from 4 May 1993, although notice has been given to discontinue these from 7 June 1993. From that date, a M-F evening peak journey is added to service 34 from Ross-on-Wye to Newent, running via Greystone in Ross, with the journey only operating locally within Ross as a service 36 on Saturdays. 34 (Ross-on-Wye - Gloucester, NSu) was extended back from 28 August 1993 to start at Monmouth, incorporating service 61 and improving the Newent - Gloucester frequency. In consequence, the Sunday and Bank Holiday journeys which ran Hereford - Ross-on-Wye - Gloucester are renumbered 32. Schools service 4 (Ross-on-Wye - Newent School via Weston-under-Penyard, Pontshill, The Lea, Longhope, Huntley, Ganders Green, Glasshouse and Cliffords Mesne) started on 5 January 1994. The 1750NSu journey from Ross-on-Wye, which ran as a 34 to Newent on Monday to Friday and a 36 to Greytree on Saturday, ceased operation after 5 February 1994.

New Schooldays service 467 (New Radnor - Kington via Walton) commenced 30 September 1991. Most of the additional works journeys on 461 (Kington - Here- ford) were withdrawn after operation on 27 September 1991. 460 (Kington Local, TTh) was amended from 10 April 1993 to omit Hergest Road, and to include a Thursday journey between Kington and Arrow View. 463 (Kington - Brilley, TF) was lost to Blue Line from the same date. The services acquired by Blue Line on 10 April 1993 included 464 (Kington -Gladestry Circular, T). Omitted was the withdrawal of 997 (Kington - Presteigne - Torvale Works, M-F) after operation on 30 September 1993. 495 (Kington - Lyonshall - Pembridge - Eardisland - Kingsland, M) is an eve- ning bingo service which became a local bus service from 3 January 1994, having previously been contract. Hereford Access Bus services 903, 905 and 913, running Mondays to Fridays only, com- menced on 6 June 1994. The services use a minibus with a wheelchair lift, and run from Green Lanes (Stephens Close) via Whitecross, Ferndale Road, Moor Farm (Barklie Court) and Canny Brook (903), from Bulmer Avenue (Frank Owen Court and Bryngwyn Court) (905) and from Bovingdon Caravan Site via Bobblestock, Ballinger Court and Holmer (913). The services termi- nate in the City Centre at Maylord Orchards, with a request extension on 903 and 913 to and from Aylestone Day Centre. 463 (Kington - Brilley via Arrow View, T) and 464 (Kington - Gladestry Circular via Huntington, Dolhir, Burlingjobb and Stanner, T) were regained from Blue Line from 4 Octo- ber 1994. Hereford "Access Bus" routes were revised from 26 September 1994. 903 (Green Lanes) now serves Crossfields and omits Ferndale Road, also diverts via Disraeli Court and Great Western Court. All three services (903/905/913) are now advertised as serving Safeway (Railway Station Approach) and not Aylestone Day Centre, although the distance between these two stops is well within the "deviation on request" facilities of the service. The Monday to Friday evening peak journey on 461 (Hereford - Weobley - Kington, NSu) run by Yeomans Canyon Travel was gained from 27 February 1995, making Sargeants the soel operator on the route. The reduction of subsidies by Powys Council resulted in the reduction of 467 (Kington - New Radnor) to T only from 6 January 1998 and the withdrawal of 486 (Kington - Presteigne - Llandrindd Wells, F) after operation on 2 January 1998.

The Saturday service on 539 (Evesham - Ashton-under-Hill, NSu) and 586 (Evesham - Davies Road) was withdrawn with effect from 6 September 1997, with the number of journeys on 554 (Evesham - Pebworth) also being reduced.

Variation 203 operates via Longbridge Island, 204 via Cofton Hackett. Stevensons Bus Services of Burton-on-Trent : 202 (Bromsgrove - Rednal - Frankley - Quinton - Halesowen, NSu) was rerouted in Rubery from 20 July 1991. The service now runs via Whetty Bridge Road, School Road, Gunner Lane, Barrington Road, Hill View Road and Waseley Road, serving a large estate previously without a bus service. The sup- plementary services on this route by Midland Red West and PMT were withdrawn from the same date, one being replaced by Ludlow's. 145 (Birmingham - Barnt Green - Bromsgrove, NSu) was taken over from Careline, under emergency contract, from 16 September 1991. Service 145 (Bromsgrove - Barnt Green - Birmingham, NSu) was gained by West Midlands Travel on retendering from 4 January 1992. This is now the second time WMT has operated the service since deregulation, also 4 other operators have run it. The morning journey on 204 (Halesowen - Cofton Hackett -Bromsgrove) was diverted via Callowbrook Lane and Cal- low Bridge Road, away from Rubery housing estates, from 6 January 1992. One early return journey remains operated by Midland Red West under contract. Stevensons Bus Services of Uttoxeter : From 28 August 1993, Stevensons have gained several services in the tendering process. The Monday to Friday off-peak service on 15A (Kidderminster - Wilden Top - Stourport) has been gained from Midland Red West, although reduced to every 2 hours. The service interworks with new service 305 (Kidderminster - Hartlebury - Waresley Court - Hartlebury Park Estate - Stourport, M-F) which runs every 2 hours and partially replaces existing Midland Red West 219 (Hartlebury - Stourport) and some journeys on 303 (Kidderminster - Worcester). The Saturday services on these routes are run by Midland Red West with some M-F peak journeys by Go Whittle. Also gained from Midland Red West was most of 304 (Kidderminster - Hartlebury -Ombersley - Holt Heath - Worcester, NSu) and most of the remaining through journeys on 303 (Kidderminster - Hartlebury - Ombersley - Worcester, NSu). Stevensons Bus Services : The commercial services on 15A (Kidderminster - Wilden Top - Stourport, M-F) and 305 (Kidderminster - Hartlebury - Stourport, M-F) were withdrawn after 19 February 1994 and re- placed by Mini Hire Services. Stevensons of Uttoxeter : This company ceased operations in the West Midlands from 14 August 1994, although the Traffic Commissioners refused to accept deregistrations without the requisite 6 weeks' notice so the services were actually de- registered from 26 September 1994. West Midlands Travel appear to have accepted respon- sibility for the services from the August date, operating technically "on hire", although as ini- tially Stevensons vehicles were used the public probably noticed no change. From 5 Sep- tember 1994, 869 (Fairfield - Sion Hill Middle School, Sch) passed to Midland Red West and 884 (Land Oak - Comberton Middle School, Sch) passed to Stevensons in a mutually agreed exchange to sort out timekeeping problems, although from 26 September all these services passed to Midland Red West as did 2A/2D (Kidderminster - Wribbenhall - Bewdley - Hales Park, NESu). 202-204 (Bromsgrove - Rubery - Halesowen, NESu) and 292 (Kidderminster - Halesowen - Birmingham, Su) passed to West Midlands Travel with 303/304 (Kidderminster - Ombersley - Hallow(304) - Worcester, NESu) being retendered.

The service, previously subsidised by Hereford and Worcester County Council with no contribution from CENTRO or Warwickshire, carried insufficient passengers to justify continuing subsidy. Stratford Blue (Midland Red South) : The "Cotswold Connection" Sunday and Bank Holiday leisure service 166 commenced on 11 April 1993. This runs between Redditch and Worcester via Crabbs Cross, Studley, Alcester, Ragley Hall Gates, Bidford-on-Avon, Welford-on-Avon, Stratford- upon-Avon, Micklton, Chipping Campden, Broadway Tower, Broadway, Wickhamford, Evesham, Pershore and Stoulton. The first journey from Stratford runs from Alcester direct to Stratford then via Welford, Bidford, Cleeve Prior, South Littleton and Badsey to Evesham, connecting at Evesham with the second bus operated by Boomerang. The midday journey from Worcester runs via the standard route to Stratford and then circles via Bidford, South Littleton and Evesham back to Worcester. 228 (Redditch - Alcester - Stratford) was improved from 19 April 1993, 2 off-peak journeys being operated in each direction Monday to Saturday, plus Schoolday peak journeys.
